This album has a scan of the speeches given at the laying of the cornerstone at Linfield (McMinnville) College's
Pioneer Hall on May 31, 1882. Two speeches were given the day of the laying of the cornerstone, the first one was a profoundly stirring and startlingly prophetic speech of its time, given by
Joseph N. Dolph who was elected that fall to the United States Senate. The other shorter speech also re-printed here follows and was given by W.C. Johnson.
At the time there was nothing at all at the campus since this marked a campus move. The new building was the sole building there when it went up and housed the entire college in the Greek Cross structure.
The campus had been downtown at the current site of the First Baptist Church and this new building with this cornerstone was being erected on the land that had belonged to 1843 Oregon Trail pioneer Samuel Cozine (the Cozine House). Later on when other buildings were built on the campus this building was renamed "Pioneer Hall." It still stands today and from its tower the sound of bells still ring out on the hour over McMinnville.
